Whales are majestic creatures, famed for their high intelligence and attractive singing. For centuries, humans have exploited whales for oil and meat. Due to this hunting, whales are close to extinction and the international community has actually banned whale fishing. Nonetheless, Japan defies the ban on whale fishing.
The negative influence humans have had on whales stems from the commercial hunting for meat and perfume compounds. More than 2 million whales were killed in the early 20th century. By the middle of the 20th century, whales were seriously endangered and amounts were diminished. In 1986 the International Whaling Commission (IWC) banned commercial whaling, but Japan continues to overlook this ban. Once the ban was in place, Japan continued to hunt whales using a loophole that provides for scientific investigation. The meat from these hunts is offered in shops and restaurants. Though Japan is skirting the rules, and it is frowned upon by the IWC, the IWC still enables it.
Whales add to the ecological variety of the oceans. Whales ingest krill, fish, and little mammals. Whales come in lots of designs and sizes and are discovered all over the globe. In spite of their diversity, most varieties of whales are at danger due to hunting, habitat changes, and human population reduction. If whales were to go extinct, there would be a considerable unfavorable influence on the natural world.
Whale hunting has been around the globe banned considering that 1986. The International Whaling Commission enacted this ban but left a number of loopholes open. Whales can be fished for scientific research, as well as by a couple aboriginal collections. Japan hunts whales to use their meat and claims that they are performing scientific research. The non-profit organization Sea Shepherd helps supervise Japan and protect against excess hunting.
The illegal whale hunts have not stopped. More wants to be done to get rid of whaling before the varieties is completely reduced. Marine Shepherd is dedicated to this fight. Visit Sea Shepherd to learn more.
Humpback whales? What parts of a Humpback whale’s body help it to survive in it’s habitat? Its structural adaptations. I came up with the fact that they are big it would help them fight off predators but thats all I can think of.
It’s only real adaption to survive is it’s size. Because of it’s large size no predator dares to attack it (usually, there have been freak incidents). It’s lung capacity could also be one, being able to hold it’s breath for about half an hour. They are also able to live in vast areas of the oceans.
Uhhh….. I’m pretty sure it their size…. My friend knows a lot about whales, I’ll ask her.
It could be that because of it’s size it would have a thick layer of blubber so it could survive when lives in colder climates.
Humpback whales migration, please help? How do humpback whales have the ability to navigate in a particular direction? ( north, south, east, west) THANK YOU SO MUCH
Nobody knows for certain. Their navigation seems to be more accurate than what sailors could achieve navigating by the sun and a compass, so even if they have a “sixth sense” that detects magnetism, it doesn’t fully explain it.
There like Pigeons they have a Built-in-Compass and it works with Magnetism. Also there instincts help. Hope this Helps!
Are you OK with the fact that Japan is going kill 50 humpback whales next week? Humpback whales should not be in the human food chain. I once saw three of them and it was a religionous expeance for me just to be in their presiance. Who knows a way that we can make the people from Japan know how strongly we feel about this?
I am. I’m not in favor of it, but I can live with it. It’s not the most tragic thing that has happened or will happen in the near future.
In what way do humpback whales benefit humans? In what way do humpback whales benefit humans?
For me personally….we go whale watching every summer and the benfit I get from them is AWE.. Plain and simple awe at seeing these beautiful creatures, so big, and so graceful. You should think of them as the ocean’s vaccum cleaners.
They’re on of nature’s creatures, and they bring excitement to people who see them, which in turn gives people with Whale Watching tours business, which feeds their families, which helps the economy of that country. Yah for Whales!
I think your question got sent to the wrong section. Humpback whales are very cool to watch, but man you gotta have a big aquarium to keep em as pets. And the food bill is something else too! j/k of course.
Why do Humpback Whales travel from North to South every year?
They travel south to have their calves in warm water and then travel north to gain access to richer feeding grounds in cold seas.
When and what months do humpback whales migrate in both the winter and summer?
i think its like January
